U.S. News & World Report, the global authority on hospital rankings, recognized Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) as a “High Performing Hospital.” TMH is the only hospital in the Tallahassee area to receive this prestigious acknowledgment.

For the 2019-2020 evaluation year, 4,653 hospitals were considered and evaluated in 12 specialty areas. To be considered a “High Performing Hospital,” an organization must place in the top 10% of the analyzed centers across the country. TMH was named a high performer for two data-driven specialty areas – Heart Failure and COPD – placing the organization among the best healthcare facilities in the country. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare has become one of five hospitals in the state of Florida, and the first in the Big Bend region, to be recognized as an Asthma-Friendly Hospital by the Florida Asthma Coalition. Asthma Friendly Hospitals are recognized for creating a safe and healthy environment for their patients with asthma.
The Panhandle’s most advanced neurosurgery program, including stroke and aneurysm treatments without opening the skull. Home to North Florida’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center and the region’s only Neurological Intensive Care Unit. State designated Brain & Spinal Cord Injury Center.
Heart & Vascular
A leader in the Southeast for exceptional heart and vascular care and advanced clinical research. Home to the region’s only Structural Heart Program, Heart Failure Program and Certified Atrial Fibrillation Clinic.
The most powerful cancer center program in the Big Bend region with medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology and gynecologic oncology all in one facility. It is the longest continually accredited community cancer program in Florida.
The only Level-II Trauma Center in the region with the area’s highest accreditations, including Comprehensive Stroke Center and Chest Pain Center with PCI.

Clinical Education Pastoral Program
In May 2014, Tallahassee Memorial was awarded full accreditation by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.
Atrial Fibrillation Accreditation Certification
In March, TMH became one of the first twenty-five hospitals in the country to receive Atrial Fibrillation Accreditation Certification from the Society of Chest Pain Center. This new certification recognizes facilities that have demonstrated expertise in diagnosing, assessing and treating atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib.
Surgical Residency Program
The Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Board of Directors and the Florida State University College of Medicine recently announced plans to create a general surgery residency program in Tallahassee.
The program, expected to produce two new general surgeons a year when at full capacity, will be the first surgery residency program in Northwest Florida. Currently, the nearest general surgery residency programs are in Jacksonville and Gainesville.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
Tallahassee Memorial is one of few hospitals selected to provide transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). This procedure offers a treatment option to aortic stenosis patients who would be ineligible or high-risk candidates for open heart surgery.
Internal Medicine Residency Program
Tallahassee Memorial in partnership with Florida State University College of Medicine, open the region’s first Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Chest Pain Center Accreditation with PCI
Tallahassee Memorial is currently the only hospital in the Big Bend region recognized by the Society of Chest Pain Centers as “Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI.”
Internal Medicine Residency Program
Florida State University and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare received good news this week in the effort to jointly develop a new internal medicine residency program: The program has received initial accreditation, clearing the way for a possible opening in the summer of 2012.

Executive of the Year
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare’s President & CEO Mark O’Bryant received national recognition as a leader in the health care industry. During ceremonies in New York City, O’Bryant was named an Executive of the Year in the 9th Annual American Business Awards. Winning a Stevie Award in the category of “Health Products and Services—More than 2,500 Employees”, he was cheered by more than 600 leaders in business as he accepted the accolade.
CMS Awards Funding For 39 New Internal Medicine Positions
A new milestone in the development of the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare/Florida State University Internal Medicine Residency Program occurred yesterday when The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced that the program will receive funding for 39 new residency positions.
National Accreditation for Breast Centers
The Tallahassee Memorial Sharon Ewing Walker Breast Health Center is the first and only breast health center in the Big Bend to be granted a three-year/Full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
2010 Outstanding Philanthropic Organization
The Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare Foundation was named 2010 Outstanding Professional Philanthropic Organization at the National Philanthropy Day Celebration.
2010/11 Consumer Choice Award
For the sixth year in a row, Tallahassee Memorial is the recipient of the National Research Corporation’s Consumer Choice Award. The Consumer Choice Award identifies hospitals that healthcare consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in over 300 markets throughout the United States.
The 2010 American Business Awards “Stevie Award” for Human Resources Team of the Year was conferred upon Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare’s Human Resources Division, citing our colleague activities, and reward and recognition programs. The Stevie’s recognize outstanding performance in workplaces worldwide.
Thomson Reuters 2010 Healthcare Advantage Award
Tallahassee Memorial was presented with a Thomson Reuters 2010 Healthcare Advantage Award for achievement in the area of Strategy and Growth. One of four organizations in the country to be honored in this category, TMH was specifically recognized by Thomson Reuters for its physician practice profile model, a unique initiative for creating greater physician alignment and integration.
National Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award
Tallahassee Memorial is the first hospital in the country to receive the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award from the American Psychological Association in recognition of its workplace practices promoting employee wellbeing and organizational performance. TMH was honored with the Florida Psychological Association’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award in July of 2009, qualifying it to be nominated for the APA award.
Cancer Program Accreditation
The American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer granted Tallahassee Memorial another 3-year Accreditation with Commendation for its cancer program, maintaining our tradition of being the longest continuously accredited cancer program in Florida. TMH is also the only accredited community hospital cancer program in the Big Bend area.
Quality Respiratory Care Recognition
For the fourth consecutive year, TMH earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition from the American Association for Respiratory Care.
Healthcare Marketing Awards
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare’s Public Relations department was honored with two healthcare marketing awards in June. Tallahassee Memorial’s Heart Health Heroes Campaign won a Mark of Excellence Award in the Community Outreach Division from the Florida Society for Healthcare Public Relations & Marketing. Tallahassee Memorial’s Art Therapy Event “When There Are No Words” received a merit award in the special event division from Healthcare Marketing Report’s Advertising Awards.
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare was honored with three MarCom Platinum Awards in October. These awards recognize outstanding creative achievement by marketing and communication professionals throughout the world.
TMH Recognized By President Obama For Mortality Reduction Efforts
President Obama recognized TMH for its continuing efforts to reduce mortality.
Consumer Choice Award
TMH was named a recipient of the National Research Corporation’s 2009/10 Consumer Choice Award, making it the fifth year in a row that we have received this distinction. The Consumer Choice Award identifies hospitals that healthcare consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in over 250 markets throughout the United States.
Organ Donation Medal of Honor
TMH received the Organ Donation Medal of Honor from the secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services for the third consecutive year. The award indicates that TMH exceeded an organ donation conversion rate of greater than 75% of eligible donors.
Level II Trauma Center
After two years of pursuing trauma center status, Tallahassee Memorial became a Florida designated Level II Trauma Center on July 1, 2009. TMH began operating as a Provisional Level II Trauma Center in May 2008 and completed the final review phase of the approval process with a site visit in April 2009. TMH’s trauma service area includes Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor and Wakulla counties.
Thomson Reuters HealthCare Advantage Awards
Thomson Reuters recognized TMH with two Healthcare Advantage Awards for significantly improving quality and managing the cost of health care.
Organ Donation Award
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare received the Organ Donation Medal of Honor. It was awarded by the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services at the fourth annual National Learning Congress and Medal of Honor ceremony. TMH is one of 373 hospitals in the nation to receive this award for meeting or exceeding a donation rate of 75 percent. This is the second time TMH received the award.

Primary Stroke Center Certification
Tallahassee Memorial was recertified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, indicating that we follow national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients. In 2005, TMH became the first hospital in the Big Bend area to achieve this certification.
Best Places to Work in Healthcare
Tallahassee Memorial was named one of 100 “Best Places to Work in Healthcare,” by Best Companies Group in collaboration with leading industry publication, Modern Healthcare. The award was based on a survey of 400 TMH colleagues that was conducted by Best Companies.
Accredited Chest Pain Center
Tallahassee Memorial received a three-year “Accreditation with PCI” from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This new designation is given to hospitals that use Percutaneous Coronary Intervention as one of their primary intervention strategies for chest pain. TMH received its initial accreditation in 2005.
Thomson Reuters Top 100 Hospitals Performance Improvement Leader Award
For the second year in a row, TMH was named one of the nation’s performance improvement leaders by Thomson Reuters. Findings from the organization’s annual 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders study showed that overall, TMH measured a faster rate and direction of performance improvement than 95% of all other U.S. hospitals.

Cancer Center Receives Accreditation with Commendation
For the 45th consecutive year, the TMH Cancer Center has received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS CoC), the national accrediting body for all cancer programs. TMH now retains the honor of being the longest continuously accredited Comprehensive Community Hospital Cancer Program (CCHCP) in the state of Florida.
VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence
VHA, a national alliance of more than 2,400 not-for-profit health care organizations recognized TMH with their 2007 Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence, for being one of the first hospitals in the country to establish a Medical Emergency Team, which provides assessment and intervention to patients with earliest signs of significant clinical changes that could indicate a medical crisis.
