Local nurse to bike 100 miles for juvenile diabetes research

A diagnosis for type 1 diabetes is life-altering. For Katherine Owen, her diagnosis at age 10 explained her lethargy and she had to be hospitalized at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

“At that time, the way we treated it was a lot different. I was told to avoid sugar,” said Owen. “Your body’s immune system goes up against its own healthy cells. It destroyed the pancreas’ ability to make insulin.”
