Neketa Coleman

Neketa Coleman is the Assistant Nurse Manager of Neurology/Neurosurgery, a tight-knit Medical-Surgical unit that works hard and plays hard, too. Led by Nurse Manager Quinston Ephraim, Neketa and her team demonstrate clinical excellence.
Neketa’s journey in healthcare began in 2007, when she took a leap of faith and left behind a corporate job to pursue her dream of making a difference in the lives of others. She started at TMH as a department secretary to get her foot in the door, despite having no prior experience in the role. In 2009, she decided to pursue nursing, and when she began her clinical rotations, she realized that caring for patients at the bedside was her true calling.
“Being a nurse means making a difference in people’s lives. When you have a chance to make an impact on someone’s life, it’s amazing,” she says.
After graduating in 2013, Neketa faced a setback—she didn’t pass her boards. She had never failed a test before in her life, and she knew the subject matter. Neketa's exam results didn’t reflect her dedication. Feeling disheartened, she left TMH. But her dream was far from over.
In January 2021, Neketa returned to TMH, more determined than ever. The Clinical Administration team saw her potential and set her up with our resident tutor, offering the support she needed to succeed. After three months of studying, Neketa passed the boards, finally achieving her dream of becoming a registered nurse—eight years after graduation.
“Once I passed, it was like the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders,” she reflected. “Everything I worked so hard for paid off. If being a nurse is your dream, stick to it no matter what.”
As an assistant nurse manager, Neketa provides support to the nurses in her unit and creates an environment where staff and patients alike can feel comfortable and thrive. Her advice to young people interested in a healthcare career is motivating.
"Stay focused and determined. The healthcare field has many different avenues one can choose from; pick one and dive in," she shared. "Healthcare is a very rewarding field, and you will be happy once you join it."
Everyone from Patient Care Assistants to Registered Nurses are valued and supported in Neketa’s unit, which is lovingly referred to as “4 North”.
“Neketa is a very active, present leader who is always willing to help,” Zoe Dixon, Patient Care Assistant in Neurology/Neurosurgery shares. “She helps us nip any issues in the bud and makes everything run smoothly on our team. Neketa makes 4 North feel like a family.”
Neketa’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and support—and her team is growing. Join the 4 North family as a Registered Nurse, Nurse Extern, Patient Care Assistant, or Unit Secretary. Visit TMH.ORG/4north to apply today.
