Remembering the Legacy of M.T. Mustian
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, as well as the Tallahassee community, lost a great leader yesterday.
Middleton Truett (M.T.) Mustian was born in Texarkana, Texas, served as a Captain in the Army’s Medical Administrative Corp. and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Baylor University. In October 1964, this “tall Texan” moved to Tallahassee to become the administrator of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (TMH). Mr. Mustian was committed to improving the morale of colleagues as well as the financial strength of the organization. It was a focus he never lost sight of during his tenure at TMH.
“They talked about M.T. as the tall Texan and he embodied that characteristic of thinking big, bigger than normal,” shared Mark O’Bryant, president & CEO of Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. “He was not a small thinker at all.”
Under Mr. Mustian’s leadership, Tallahassee Memorial grew in services and physical structure, including the additions of the A, North and South wings, the Behavioral Health Center and the main parking garage. Tallahassee’s population continued to grow so Mr. Mustian added a fully staffed emergency room, ambulance service and an off-site helistop to care for urgent medical needs of the community. He also saw a need to add more critical care services and established specialized intensive care units. To this day, TMH remains home to the only newborn intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit and neuro intensive care unit in the Big Bend region.
“When FAMU Hospital closed, charge nurses were placed in charge nurse positions at TMH and decisions like that helped to ease the integration of the two hospitals and the minds of the community,” explained A.D Brickler, MD, Tallahassee Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program. “That was the type of foresight that Mr. Mustian had as a leader.”
Mr. Mustian retired from Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare in 1989, but continued to serve as President Emeritus and work closely with the TMH Foundation. He leaves behind a legacy of leading by example and a strong moral compass that helps to guide the organization today.
