Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is the first hospital in Florida and ninth in the nation to be designated a Comprehensive Care PE Center of Excellence™ by The PERT Consortium®, a national organization dedicated to improving care for patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) through multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERTs) .

This designation follows a rigorous review process and recognizes TMH’s ability to provide the highest level of coordinated, evidence-based care for patients experiencing pulmonary embolism, including complex and high-risk cases.

“Pulmonary embolism is a life-threatening condition that demands rapid recognition and coordinated care,” said David Huang, MD, Pulmonologist at TMH. “Achieving designation as a PERT Center of Excellence reflects the strength of our multidisciplinary approach and our commitment to advancing therapies, evidence-based protocols and ongoing staff training to ensure the highest level of care.”
As a Comprehensive Care Center, TMH provides the full spectrum of advanced PE therapies, including clot-dissolving medications, minimally invasive catheter-based procedures and surgical interventions. The program also includes dedicated critical care support, standardized treatment protocols, ongoing quality monitoring and participation in research and education initiatives designed to continually improve patient outcomes.

“Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare is the first program in Florida recognized as a Comprehensive Pulmonary Embolism Center of Excellence by the PERT Consortium, an important milestone that highlights a highly coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to PE and VTE care.
The designation advances the vision of the Emily Adkins Family Protection Act, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, by strengthening infrastructure that translates deeper insight into better care. It also reflects TMH’s forward-thinking culture, pairing innovation, technology, and guideline-driven practice with the expertise of its many specialty teams to continually raise the standard. Above all, this work is grounded in a shared commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centered care for the patients and families we serve across our community,” shared Andres M. Vargas, MD, Interventional Cardiologist at TMH.

TMH’s designation as a Comprehensive Care PE Center of Excellence™ reflects that many of the measures that will be required by recent legislation are already firmly in place. By investing early in coordinated PE care, TMH is helping set the benchmark for how hospitals across the state will approach blood clot prevention and treatment in the years ahead.

About Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot, usually from the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis), travels to the lungs and blocks a pulmonary artery or one of its branches. PE can occure suddenly and is potentially life-threatening, making rapid diagnosis and treatment critical.
