TMH Invests $20M into New Heart Rhythm Lab
October 5, 2026The 14,500-square-foot expansion adds two procedure suites and advanced technology to improve access to specialized heart care.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Monday, Oct. 5, 2026) – Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is expanding access to specialized care for patients with heart rhythm disorders through its new Heart Rhythm Lab, a $20 million project designed to reduce wait times and bring the latest electrophysiology technology to Big Bend patients. Located on the first floor of TMH’s main hospital, the 14,500-square-foot renovation includes two new electrophysiology (EP) suites, a 12-bed unit for care before and after procedures and a dedicated physician workspace.
“People across our region depend on TMH for access to advanced medical care close to home,” said Dustin Zabokrtsky, Assistant Vice President of TMH’s Heart and Vascular Services. “This investment strengthens that commitment by expanding our ability to care for patients with heart rhythm disorders. We are investing in the facilities and technology our physicians need to serve this community for years to come.”
Electrophysiology focuses on diagnosing and treating problems with the heart’s electrical system that cause abnormal rhythms. The additional suites will allow TMH to perform more EP procedures, helping patients receive specialized treatment sooner and closer to home.
The Heart Rhythm Lab features advanced imaging designed to reduce radiation exposure for patients and physicians. It also is equipped with the latest ablation technology designed to treat atrial fibrillation, or AFib, safely and effectively while reducing procedure times.
AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that can cause fatigue, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Ablation targets heart tissue responsible for abnormal electrical signals to help restore a normal rhythm.
“For patients whose Afib affects their daily lives, easier access to treatment can make a real difference,” said Venkata Bavikati, MD, Chair of the Electrophysiology Council and a cardiac electrophysiologist with TMH Physician Partners, services by Southern Medical Group. “Our new lab gives us the advanced technology and tools needed to better treat abnormal heart rhythms while continuing to focus on safety and each patient’s needs.”
The Heart Rhythm Lab includes Abbott’s Volt™ Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System, an advanced technology for treating AFib. While traditional ablation methods use heat or cold, Volt uses precisely targeted electrical pulses to treat the heart tissue causing abnormal rhythms while minimizing impact on surrounding tissue and structures, making procedures safer, more precise and efficient for patients. The expansion is part of TMH’s ongoing commitment to bringing advanced therapies and greater access to specialized medical treatment to the region.
