Dr. Melissa Amundson will lead the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons through the next year.

 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 1, 2026) – Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is proud to announce that Melissa Amundson, DDS, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at TMH specializing in trauma reconstruction, has been named President of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS).


After serving for several years on the ACOMS board of directors, Dr. Amundson will lead the organization through the coming year, helping advance education, innovation and excellence in oral and maxillofacial surgery nationwide.

"Serving in this role is a great opportunity to collaborate with leading surgeons across the country, exchange ideas and help shape the future of patient care. I look forward to bringing those experiences back to Tallahassee and our patients at TMH"


At TMH, Dr. Amundson provides specialized care for patients with complex facial injuries, including facial gunshot wounds, facial fractures, eye socket injuries, dog bites and other severe facial lacerations. This includes a specialty in facial ballistic injuries and complex secondary reconstruction of the facial skeleton, utilizing advanced virtual surgical planning and customized implants. Her work in these areas has been widely published and recognized throughout the specialty.


In addition to her recent appointment as ACOMS president, Dr. Amundson has received several prestigious honors for her professional achievements and humanitarian service. In 2025, she was awarded the Luminary Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, recognizing alumni who have demonstrated leadership, innovation and positive change. She also received the Rising Star Award from the University of Illinois for her contributions to international humanitarian surgery.


Dr. Amundson's career and expertise has taken her across the United States and around the world, providing care to patients with complex injuries and advancing surgical education. Her international work includes long-term projects in Honduras, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. She currently serves as a consultant surgeon for Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) and Mercy Ships.


Committed to educating the next generation of healthcare professionals, Dr. Amundson also remains actively involved in teaching Florida State University medical students and regularly lectures at the national level.
