About Me
Dr. Whit Oliver was born in Baptist Hospital on Napoleon Ave in New Orleans. All his life he has loved gumbo, po-boys, red beans and rice, jazz music, Mardi Gras and all things Louisiana. A graduate of Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans, he arrived in Tallahassee in 1979 to attend the TMH Family Practice Residency Program. Following his residency, he was the second Fellow in Obstetrics at the Family Practice Residency Program, where he was mentored by Dr. Alexander D. Brickler.
Dr. Oliver spent many years in private practice, first in New Orleans, then Altha, Florida in rural Calhoun County, and 30 years in Tallahassee. Whatever the setting, he undertook the care of families from the tiniest baby to the most fragile geriatric patient. He has always sought to provide his patients with full range of family medicine that his training embraces. In 2010, Dr. Oliver was chosen as the recipient of the I B Harrison by the Capital Medical Society, which recognizes the humanitarian approach to the practice of medicine by a local physician.
Dr. Oliver and his wife Molly have been married for close to 50 years. As parents and grandparents, they are part of a large and loving family. He has also participated actively with Scouting locally with Troop 118, the Suwannee River Area Council as a volunteer physician, and whenever possible volunteering as a physician at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico typically a week in the summer.
The primary focus of his current work since joining the faculty fulltime in 2019, is supervision of residents and fellows on the labor deck at TMH. With thousands of deliveries under his belt and with many years of management of challenging obstetrical patients he provides a steady hand in L & D. He has been for over 30 years a supervisor of residents on OB rotation, fellows and midwives at TMH. At his current job at the Family Practice Residency Program, he can always be counted on to assist in an obstetric emergency, but also to routinely offer empathetic and intelligent counsel and to brighten the workday with an easy sense of humor. And, of course, he can always be counted on to bring the King Cake!
