What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An intensive outpatient program is a short-term, structured outpatient mental health treatment option in a group setting that offers three hours of therapy per day, three days per week. IOPs provide a multidisciplinary approach that combines psychiatric treatment and medication management with licensed professional counselors who provide individualized, evidence-based treatment based on your needs. It provides a higher level of support than weekly counseling, while allowing patients to return home after each session.

IOPs focus on helping individuals better understand their thoughts, emotions and behaviors while learning effective strategies to manage them. Through a combination of group therapy, individual support and skill-building, patients gain tools they can apply in real time.

Is IOP right for you?

IOP may be a good fit for individuals who:

  • Are experiencing anxiety, depression or mood-related challenges that are impacting daily life
  • Need more structure and support than traditional outpatient therapy provides
  • Are stepping down from inpatient or residential treatment and need continued care
  • Feel stuck or overwhelmed and are ready to actively engage in improving their mental health
  • Want to learn practical coping strategies in a supportive, structured environment – while having the opportunity to utilize those real-world skills immediately

Patients in IOP can manage their daily responsibilities while participating in treatment.
