We're Leading the Fight Against Lung Cancer

At Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH), we’re leading the fight against lung cancer with the most comprehensive lung cancer care program and the most innovative technology in Tallahassee and the Big Bend region.

Our physicians at TMH Physician Partners – Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep specialize in screening, diagnosing and treating lung cancer and a wide range of other pulmonary disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), pneumonia and asthma.

Lung Cancer and Screening

Lung cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. The best chance to beat lung cancer is through early detection by following US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screening recommendations. The 5-year survival rate of early-stage lung cancer is nearly triple that of lung cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

The USPSTF recommends low-dose CT lung screening for those who:

  • Are 50 to 80 years old, and
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, and
  • Have a 20 pack-year smoking history (a pack year is one pack per day for a year).

If you meet this criteria, you should speak with your primary care provider about lung cancer screening.

MONARCH Robotic Bronchoscopy

Physicians at TMH can now detect lung cancer earlier than ever using the MONARCH™ Robotic Bronchoscopy Platform.

MONARCH™ helps physicians find small cancerous nodules in areas of the lungs that are harder to reach with traditional bronchoscopy. Our physicians use the image-guided robot to perform minimally invasive bronchoscopy procedures to detect, biopsy, diagnose and mark lung cancer.

It sometimes takes physicians multiple procedures to locate cancerous tumors in the lungs, but MONARCH™ gives physicians a better chance of finding cancer through fewer procedures.

Tallahassee Memorial Thoracic Oncology Clinic

The Tallahassee Memorial Thoracic Oncology Clinic is the region’s only multidisciplinary collaborative care team that aims to expedite care for patients with suspected lung cancer or other thoracic cancers.

A team of specialists led by Carlos Campo, MD – which includes pulmonologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and other medical providers – come together every other Thursday to review each referred case and create an individualized care plan for each patient they review.

Each patient is then invited to meet with our Thoracic Oncology Clinic team to discuss and learn about their proposed care plan. This condenses weeks of appointments and planning into one day, at one location.

If a patient chooses to move forward with their care plan at the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center, our Thoracic Oncology Navigator will coordinate appointments, diagnostics and procedures for the patient, creating a seamless experience for the patient and caregivers alike.
