Shadowing and Observing
Thank you for your interest in observing at TMH. Observations provide individuals the opportunity to witness and gain insight about the various activities healthcare professionals engage in daily. Observations are considered only at the request of the TMH staff member or physician whom you would be with for this experience. The steps to observing/shadowing is as follows:
TMH COLLEAGUES REQUESTING OBSERVATION EXPERIENCES, PLEASE REFER TO SPARK FOR INFORMATION
- Locate a sponsor: Applicants must first identify a TMH physician or staff member who will agree to sponsor the observation.
- Observations in the Surgical Services (OR) or Behavioral Health are not available to High School Students.
- Observations with Anesthesiology will be approved on a case-by-case basis.
- Observations in the OR will only be approved for one day.
- Complete an observation application: Applicants must review, complete, and sign page one of the application. The TMH physician or staff member sponsor will need to complete and sign page two of the application. (Please note: If you are under the age of eighteen (18) or in high school, the application must have a parent or guardian signature to be considered.)
- Return the application to The Office of the Academic Liaison: The Observation application should be submitted 4-6 weeks before the start date. Due to time constraints applications submitted with less than three (3) weeks’ notice may not be ready for requested start date. Applications must be returned to academic.info@tmh.org
- All observations will require the following:
- A Complete Intake Packet
- Orientation Exam
- Background Screen
- Drug Screen
- Proof of COVID Vaccination or exemption
- Immunization Records
- Proof of current negative TB Test
After your application is approved, you will be sent an approval email along with the appropriate clearance requirements that must be completed prior to the start of the observation. Once cleared, you will be issued an observer badge to be worn for the duration of your time at TMH. There is a $5 non-refundable badge fee for all observers. Observation badges should be returned to the front desk in Human Resources once your experience is finished.
Any observation taking place in the Behavioral Health Center will require additional clearance requirements at a cost of at least $75.45. All costs associated with the clearance process are the responsibility of the observer.
