Hospital-Based Care
At our Children’s Center, you’ll have the most experienced pediatric team in the region caring for your child, including pediatricians, pediatric specialists, award-winning nurses and the Big Bend’s only certified child life specialists. We’re also home to the area’s only pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), meaning we provide the highest level of kids’ critical care, should the unthinkable happen.
About Our Pediatric Unit
Located on the Second Floor of our Main Hospital, our Children’s Center includes a 23-bed inpatient children’s unit, family respite room, kid-friendly treatment room and playroom – a space for kids to just be kids.
About Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Inside our Children’s Center is also our PICU – the only unit specialized to care for kids with life threatening illness or injury within 100 miles of Tallahassee. Here, our pediatric critical care doctors and specially trained PICU nurses will provide the highest level of care for your kiddo, while supporting your family throughout the hospitalization.
Your Child’s Care Team
While in the Children’s Center, key members of your child’s healthcare team include:
- Pediatricians, pediatric critical care doctors and pediatric specialists
- Pediatric nurses and patient care assistants
- Child life specialist dedicated to helping kids cope with hospitalization
- Pediatric pharmacist
- Music therapists
- Animal Therapy teams
We also recognize what a crucial role parents and guardians play in our patients’ care – after all, you know your child best! We strongly encourage you to participate in decision making regarding your child’s treatment and healthcare.
Truman Family Respite Room
When Pediatric Critical Care Physician Dr. Tom Truman and Pediatric ICU Nurse Practitioner Tiffany got married, they chose to forego gifts and instead ask their guests to make donations to the TMH Foundation. These donations fully funded the Truman Family Respite Room in the Children’s Center.
This room includes a TV, couch, coffee maker and private bathroom for families to use while they relax in private during their child’s hospital stay. The donations also funded the purchase of a washer and dryer for families to use.
