Parkinsonism Multidisciplinary Team Clinic (PMTC)

What to Expect at Your Visit

If you are scheduled for the Parkinsonism Multidisciplinary Team Clinic, this page will help you prepare and understand what your appointment will look like.

PMTC appointments are designed to give you a comprehensive evaluation in one coordinated visit, helping your care team better understand your needs and create a personalized plan.

How the Clinic Visit Works

Your PMTC appointment is longer than a typical neurology visit and usually lasts approximately 2–3 hours.

During this time, you will rotate through evaluations with different specialists. Each provider focuses on a specific area of function that may be affected by atypical parkinsonism.

Rather than working in isolation, the team collaborates behind the scenes to ensure recommendations are coordinated and aligned.

What Will Be Evaluated

Your visit may include assessments related to:

  • Walking, balance and fall risk
  • Fine motor skills and daily tasks such as dressing or eating
  • Speech clarity and communication
  • Swallowing safety
  • Cognitive changes
  • Emotional well-being
  • Caregiver support needs
  • Eligibility for advanced therapies, including Deep Brain Stimulation (if appropriate)

Evaluations typically include conversation, observation and simple functional activities. No special testing preparation is required.

Who You May See During Your Visit

Depending on your needs, your care team may include:

  • Movement Disorder Neurologist
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Physical Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Speech Therapist
  • Social Worker
  • Rehabilitation Clinical Coordinator
  • Deep Brain Stimulation Navigator

Not every patient sees every specialist. Your evaluations are tailored to your condition and symptoms.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Because your visit may last several hours, we recommend:

  • Bringing a list of current medications, or your medications in their original bottles
  • Wearing comfortable clothing and supportive shoes
  • Bringing a snack, if desired
  • Bringing any mobility aids you use regularly (walker, cane, etc.)

If possible, bring a caregiver or family member. They can provide valuable insight into changes in function and help remember recommendations discussed during the visit.

Insurance and Co-Pays

Since multiple therapy disciplines may be involved in your visit, separate co-pays may apply based on your insurance coverage.

The therapy department will verify benefits and contact you before your appointment to review any financial responsibility. The neurology specialty co-pay will be collected at the time of your visit.

After Your Clinic Visit

Following your evaluations, the team meets to review findings and develop coordinated recommendations.

These may include:

  • Therapy referrals
  • Home safety strategies
  • Medication adjustments
  • Community resources
  • Caregiver support services
  • Additional specialty follow-up

Your neurologist will review the full care plan with you at your next follow-up appointment, ensuring you have time to ask questions and discuss next steps.
